“At the beginning, the reason why China was seen to support, or was building, this pro-Russian neutralism vis-à-vis the Ukranian issue was determined by the fact that some Chinese thinkers thought that this could help China to dilute the hegemonic pressure of the US and to move this pressure from the South China Sea, from Taiwan, more prominently to the European front, in a sort of repetition of the Cold War experience. But in fact, there was a famous report published by Renmin University in Beijing in May that emphasized this point: we got it wrong, and the situation in Ukraine is accelerating the great encirclement by the United States.”
