Nel dicembre del 2020, la Repubblica popolare cinese ha portato a termine con successo la missione lunare Chang’e-5, raccogliendo e trasportando sulla Terra circa due kilogrammi di rocce seleniche. Il rientro della capsula ha rappresentato solo l’ultimo step, in ordine di tempo, di un programma di esplorazione della Luna estremamente complesso e articolato, che, negli ultimi anni, ha destato non poca preoccupazione da parte degli osservatori statunitensi. Il presente saggio si propone di esaminare la reazione statunitense alle ambizioni lunari di Pechino, ricorrendo altresì a un ampio campione di fonti in lingua cinese per ricostruire il dibattito sorto nella Rpc sul nuovo programma spaziale degli USA, Artemis, ormai prossimo all’avvio.
