This study provides a reference framework on huaqiao xuexiao(华侨学校) based on ethnographic research conducted in southern Zhejiang, a region historically linked to migration to Italy. Unlike huawen xuexiao ( 华文学校), which are Chinese heritage language schools outside the People’s Republic of China, huaqiao xuexiao refers here to both public and private institutions in China attended by students with transnational migration backgrounds. As part of the “ECCO (Education of Children of Chinese Origin)-Italy” project, this research draws on ten audio-recorded interviews with school principals (n=5, 225 min) and teachers (n=5, 160 min) from five huaqiao xuexiao in Chatang, Rui’an, Chashan (Wenzhou Area), Yuhu (Wencheng County), and Qingtian. The observatory analysis explores pedagogical strategies for transnational students, schools’ relationships with institutional bodies in China and abroad, and their role in addressing the emotional challenges of students separated from their parents.
