China Global South Project – 3 March 2026

“I think China sees Iran as an important counterpart. It provides energy and natural resources. It’s also useful because it distracts American policymakers at certain moments. But I don’t think China feels obliged to rescue it. Maybe when the dust finally settles, it will provide some kind of support, but it doesn’t feel obligated to intervene.”

Andrea Ghiselli (T.wai & University of Exeter) is interviewed in the podcast “Did the Iran War Just Hand China a Strategic Crisis?” of the China Global South Project.
