Italy is home to the largest resident population of PRC citizens in Europe, the result of almost a century of migration history. During the second half of the 20th century and the early decades of the 21st century, this important contingent of the global Chinese diaspora has set up a growing number of community associations, which are generally spearheaded by immigrant entrepreneurs. These associations mainly provide important links to inform and direct collective action as platforms for cultivating political and business ties with the home country, but they can also present themselves and function as possible interlocutors or partners for Italian local institutions. This article showcases the preliminary results of the first structured attempt at mapping out a complete picture of the present makeup of Chinese diaspora associations in Italy at national level. The authors also posit that most if not all these associations are clearly linked to the PRC institutions and organizations which preside over the implementation of diaspora policy worldwide and are thus an important conduit of PRC political influence among diasporics living in Italy.
